As Emporians, we’ve never backed down from fighting for our future so that our children might have more opportunities than the generations before us.
The past few years, Emporia has seen its fair share of challenges. Friends and neighbors have lost their jobs. The cost of getting ahead feels more out of reach. And, our community feels more divided than ever before. Through it all, it’s easy to wonder if our children will be able to go further than we have.
But there’s a change in the air. Technology and the jobs of tomorrow are on our doorstep today. There are those who are afraid of change … who fear the future … who want us to stay stuck in the past even if it means watching our community and our families fall further behind.
The question in front of us is not whether the future is coming. It’s whether we will embrace it in order to give our children and our grandchildren the chance to thrive here. We have an opportunity this election to say no to fear. To say no to going backward. And to welcome investment in a brighter tomorrow.
On November 3, don’t ban Emporia’s future. Vote No on Question 2 and 3.
WHAT DOES A “NO” VOTE DO?
Creates new opportunities to significantly reduce our property tax rates, shifting the burden off of our families who already pay enough.
Protects the economic development process that has responsibly served our community for generations. This process has allowed Emporia to attract and keep major employers like Simmons, Hill’s, Cargill, Hostess and Sauder, while requiring strict reviews and public hearings on all aspects of their development plan, utility needs, noise setbacks and architectural appearance before the community decides whether or not to move forward with approval of a new business.
A responsible process like the one we have in place keeps Emporia open for business, instead of sending the message to developers that we’re not interested in new jobs or investments.
WHAT DOES A “YES” VOTE DO?
Bans our community from allowing certain technology-related companies (like data warehouses) from bringing new businesses and jobs to Emporia for at least 10 years, at which point the technology sector will have chosen other communities, leaving Emporia behind.
Bans certain battery storage systems for at least 10 years, which blocks new businesses from coming here. It also jeopardizes the operating needs of the manufacturing and distribution facilities we have, putting Emporia at risk of losing more major employers.
Restricts your private property rights, preventing land owners from selling their private property to certain technology companies.
Allows non-technology companies that require large load electricity and/or water resources to build in Emporia.
Keeps our families on the hook to pay the majority of city property taxes.
